Cerro del Quemado (El Quemado Huichol ceremonial center)

Real de Catorce

A sacred region

Immerse yourself in one of the sites that Wikarika or Huichol indigenous cosmovisions consider sacred: the Cerro del Quemado. This ceremonial center is located a few kilometers from Real de Catorce and sits 3,800 meters (12,470 feet) above sea level.

After harvesting peyote (an endemic cactus with hallucinogenic properties), the Huichol community gathers here to engage in magical rituals around three concentric circles. Once the cactus has been harvested, shamans consume it in order to commune with their ancestors.

If you're keen to know more, you can explore further and take in its mysticism. There are expeditions on horseback that last around an hour and depart from Real de Catorce. Additionally, you can book a personal ceremony with the Huichol community on November and December.
