The Adoquín

Puerto Escondido

Art, gastronomy and the best atmosphere in one place

Puerto Escondido used to be a small fishing village and lacked the paved streets we see today. After Puerto Escondido's tourist boom, roadwork began in order to make the town's downtown area more traversable. The first avenue they finished was Alfonso Pérez Gasca Avenue, better known as “El Adoquín”, a nickname given by the locals given the material with which it was paved.

The avenue runs parallel to Puerto Escondido's the main beach. During the day, it is open to vehicular traffic but, at night, it becomes a long pedestrian walkway lined with a variety of nightlife options, including bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Furthermore, this is the only place where you'll find an ATM, in addition to cheap hostels and hotels.

There are street festivals almost every week, featuring dancing calendas (giant papier mâché puppets) who distribute sips of mezcal among the tourists. It's also a good place to shop for surfing equipment and lessons, since it´s one of the most popular activities in Puerto Escondido's beaches.

Now you know that, if you're looking for a peaceful vacation, you should steer clear from the hotels on the Adoquín, since parties can last all night.
