Lázaro Cárdenas del Río Museum

Jiquilpan

As is well known, Lazaro Cardenas del Rio, the general and ex president of Mexico who nationalized the oil industry, was born in Jiquilpan de Juarez, Michoacán. In his honor, a museum was founded to tell the story of his life, as well as that of General Francisco J. Múgica, a relevant figure during the Mexican Revolution.

The building that houses the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río Museum (Museo de Vida y Obra de Lázaro Cárdenas del Río) was built in three stages: the first, in 1976, included an exhibition hall with archaeological pieces and another with the history of the oil expropriation, as well as a newspaper library and the historical archive of Jiquilpan. The second stage took place in 1980, where an area for researchers was built. Four years later, an auditorium for conferences was added as part of the final stage.

The museum also displays clothing, weapons and cars used by Cárdenas, as well as some of the furniture that decorated his house, most of which was carved in precious woods. Currently, the site is part of the 25 university museums of UNAM.

The museum is located at avenida Lázaro Cárdenas 126, in the downtown of Jiquilpan. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9:00 to 19:00.
