The magic of Tepoztlán

The place where time stands still
Known for being the closest Magical Town to Mexico City, Tepoztlán is located 80km (128 miles) from the great city and can be reached by taking the highway to Cuernavaca with a detour to Oaxtepec.

Named Magical Town since 2010, its name comes from the Nahuatl language, and means '' Place of copper ax’’; this incredible destination is protected by the Cerro del Tepozteco, considered a place full of mysticism, crafts, and a Relaxing environment perfect to escape for a weekend.

Ancestral connection

The first obligatory stop is the visit to Cerro del Tepozteco, a sacred mountain that will take your breath away with its views, the tour begins at the Cruz de Axitla, the tour can last more than an hour, so go prepared for a long walk and wear comfortable clothes.

At the top, you can find  a pyramid of the Mexica culture, in honor of the God Ometochtli, the God of Pulque, every March 21 it is filled with visitors and there are various activities, due to the celebration of the spring equinox. From the top, you can admire the ancestral shrine and enjoy the view granted by nature.

To continue with the tour of this destination, the next thing is to take a walk through the center, where we will find a parish dedicated to the Virgin of the Nativity, and every 8 of September, the site comes alive to celebrate. On one side, you can find the Ex Convento de Orden Dominica, dating from 1560, taking advantage of its structure and the history that each hall keeps, the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), decided to give it a second use, and now it is the Museo Ex Convento de Tepoztlán.

In each hall of the museum, the history of what Mexico was like and the life of the Dominican order is present in this historical and architectural gem. More than 1200 pieces that are considered pre-Hispanic art are exhibited, along with the collection of the famous poet Carlos Pellicer.

In every street, you can find vestiges of our ancient Mexico, such as the houses made with the famous “pochote” tree, and sculptures that are carved in the thorn of the pochoizcatl or wild cotton tree.

A place full of color

A few steps from the Convent, the colorful “tianguis” (flea market) is located, where we can find a wide variety of crafts, products and souvenirs, such as fabrics, musical instruments, the famous “teponaztli” (slit wooden drum used by the Aztecs), wicker baskets, etc. All of this produced by local artists and artisans.

Touring each magical place in Tepoztlán is sure to whet your appetite, taking advantage of the stop at the tianguis, do not forget to try the typical dishes, such as the” itacates” (thick corn patties with cheese), the “tlalqueteadas” (vegan "gorditas" made with pinole, sesame seeds and chia), or some delicious cecina tacos from Yecapixtla.
