Sierra de Órganos National Park

Sombrerete

In a disruptive way, but as if on the spot they carry the intention of creating music with the wind, the countless stones that rise from the earth to the clouds in Sierra de Órganos seem to communicate with each element, with each being that places itself in front of its landscape that no matter how arid it wishes to be, is life bursting out in the middle of the Sierra Madre Occidental.

The site was declared a National Park in the year 2000 and it is said that the name comes from the multiple rock formations that remind us of the organ pipes of some old cathedral. The height they reach ranges from 20 to 60 meters ( 65 to 200 feet ), so you can get an idea of the colossal size they are and how impressive they can be.

Their unique beauty, which contrasts with the surrounding vegetation and the purity of the sky that shelters this territory, has seduced foreign productions that have shared their enigmatic landscapes on the big screen.

Celluloid lovers have surely identified them before in films such as “ The Caveman”, where the Beatle Ringo Star appears, as well as “Revenge”, a 90s film where the gallant of that decade, Kevin Costner, acted. If you look further on, you will also find scenes from the film “Bandidas”, starring Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz. If one day you get the chance, take a look at them.

You can go there just to give the one-day tour, walk around the park and do a hard walk worth every minute in it; or if you prefer you can ask where the area allowed for camping is located, it is advisable that you take your tent and be a responsible traveler since the care you take in areas like these depends on whether it is still possible to spend the night there.

From the center of Sombrerete to the National Park, it will take you 31 minutes by car (30 km / 19 miles), enjoy the scenery, and get ready for the adventure.
