Uxmal Site Museum

Uxmal

Within the archaeological site of Uxmal is el Museo de Sitio (Site Museum) that protects the cultural elements recovered during the archaeological exploration works and serves as a guide for the visitor to see what is in the archaeological site.

The museum has three rooms in which objects of domestic and ceremonial use are exhibited, as well as sculptures and decorative elements in the architectural style of Uxmal and the Puuc region such as the remains of friezes, steles, glyphs, and stone sculptures.

It begins with the room Medio Ambiente y Estilo Arquitectónico (Environment and Architectural Style), here we talk about the ecological and climatic variations of the Yucatan Peninsula, especially the area of la serranía (Puuc), which was the scenario for the development of the cities. It is observed how the architectural elements of the Puuc style were, which stands out for its hydraulic system and the pattern of settlement.

Desarrollo histórico (Historical Development) is the second room, exhibiting the material heritage of Uxmal's inhabitants and explaining the differences with other Mayan sites. Archaeological research at the site is also described.

Finally, there is the room Esculturas (Sculptures), here you can approach the representations of deities, the social organization, and its leaders, as well as the development of writing and mathematics in the ancient city.

After touring each room, visit the restaurant, the bookstore, and the handicraft store.
