It was first the residence of the general Francisco Cantón, governor of
Yucatán, and after several years of reforms in its operations, it became the
Museo Regional de Antropología of the State. It has a permanent exhibition about the
pre-Hispanic Mayan society, temporary exhibitions, educational workshops and is a venue for cultural events.
The building keeps the neo-French style both on the inside and outside, many of its decorative elements were brought from Europe and in its boom years, the building was reference to the
Yucatán high society.
Splendor didn’t last much, according to historians, wasting resources led the descendants to bankruptcy. They lost the palace and ended up giving the property to the
Yucatán government, which has managed the place ever since.
On your tour, take a good look around you, because you will notice at first sight the fine materials used during its construction. Don’t leave without going down the White Marble Stairs and without walking through the peaceful outside gardens.
