House of Legends

Orizaba

Just behind the Palacio de Hierro is the Casa Consistorial, built in the 18th century, home to one of the most mysterious and dismal corners of this Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town), the Casa de las Leyendas (House of Legends) which, as its name indicates, will reveal the most famous and macabre stories that occurred in Orizaba, Veracruz, and which have passed on by word of mouth for generations.

You will feel chills and your skin will bristle when you walk through the eleven stages accompanied by life-size sculptures, models and sets of lights, transporting you to the peak of the legend in an atmosphere full of suspense and mysticism.

The place was an idea of the municipality that sought to maintain oral traditions, so they invited nine plastic artists and craftsmen from the area to represent those stories that scared them as children.

During the tour you will learn about several legends that are kept alive in the collective imagination of the inhabitants, such as the story of Gallardo, a criminal who was sentenced to death for his atrocious crimes. Also, the “chaneques”(mytological creatures), La Llorona, the witches who climb the Cerro del Borrego to perform rites, the girl who walks in the darkest nights among the tombs of the city's cemetery or the mermaid that appears in Ojo de Agua.

If your heart can take it, you can write down in your agenda, the night tour they do in the Panteón Municipal (Municipal Cemetery) “Juan de la Luz Enríquez”, full of stories from the afterlife. Do you dare?
