Coscomatepec

The Plaza de la Constitución with its high palm trees, its benches and it kiosque is the heart of Coscomatepec. Next to the Miguel Hidalgo plazuela, you will see the fountain which was the first supply point of drinkable water of the locality.

Here, every week, the Monday Tianguis is installed. Here the exchange of different products is still a tradition. You will be able to see the San Juan Bautista church, from the XVII century. It has two towers, but it does not have a dome since the structure needed to be as light as possible due to foundation problems.

Another important feature that this place offers is the possibility of seeing one of the famous Cristos de la Agonía. There are only three in the world, one in Cantabria, Spain and the other in Havana, Cuba.

Coming back to the Plaza de la Constitución you have to visit the Municipal Palace that is decorated with mural painting by the artist María del Carmen Calderón Rendón. This Paintings narrate the history of Coscomatepec. You can also visit the Community Museum of Tetlalpan where you will find a collection of Prehispanic pieces.

The Hotel Boutique Posada of the Emperor is another important place to visit and is full of history. This casona, that was built in the year 1822 has beautiful big windows, fountains and gardens. It still keep some original furniture in Colonial style. It is called this way since the Emperor Maximiliano of Habsburgo spent one night here.

Other important guest in this hotel were Benito Juárez, Guillermo Prieto, Nicolás Bravo and Francisco Gabilondo Soler. This way, there are 15 thematic rooms dedicated to these important personalities in the history of Mexico.

In one of the different tours through the Historical Center of Coscomatepec you will be able to visit the local workspaces and workshops that still make handcraft cigars. You can visit the traditional bakery La Fama with more than 90 years old. Its speciality is wood oven baked bread and pastries like the doncellas, the cubiletes, the huapinoles and the coscorrones.
