One of Veracruz state's most important ports is Coatzacoalcos, a place not only full of natural wealth but with many prehispanic stories. Likewise, many European conquerors' had their first contact with the new continent during Colony times here.

Its Nahuatl origin name means in Spanish “Where the serpent hides”, due to a legend that tells that the god Quetzalcóatl left there navigating the Coatzacoalcos River promising to return. This is how the area's first settlers established waiting for the Serpiente Emplumada coming back.

Coatzacoalcos is in Veracruz southern, bordering Pajapan, Cosoleacaque, Minatitlán, Ixhuatlán del Sureste, Moloacán and Las Choapas municipalities.

Its landscape is the Gulf of Mexico and, to the east, it meets Tabasco state. To get there by road you must drive for 30 minutes from Minatitlán, 2 hours and 10 minutes from Villahermosa, Tabasco; 3 hours and 20 minutes from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas; and 3 and a half hours from the Port of Veracruz. The closest airport is Minatitlán.

Coatzacoalcos weather is warm and the driest months are March and April. Its average temperature is 25º C, although on the hottest days it reaches up to 40º C. The city is surrounded by Laguna del Ostión and Tonalá and Coatzacoalcos rivers. Summers are very rainy.

The people of Veracruz are happy and hospitable, so when you pass through this city you’ll find one of its most beautiful expressions: jarana’s music and the fun songs the musicians dedicate to their audience. Don't be surprised if suddenly you’re one of the protagonists of these full of flavor and mischie songs.

Coatzacoalcos economic importance is related to the petrochemical complexes and the port’s gaining relevance in goods transportation.

That is why two majestic and iconic bridges currently cross: Coatzacoalcos 1, brought from Germany in the late 1950s; and Coatzacoalcos 2, inaugurated in 1984. These function to connect certain city areas over the water.
