Parish of the Immaculate Conception

Ciudad Mier

It’s Plaza Juárez face and the first Ciudad Mier building, founded in 1753. The complex was constructed in sandstone and later, around 1900, the bell tower was built under the French architect design surnamed Poursheel.

Inside, there are over-200-years-old relics such as two baptismal fonts, one embedded in the wall and the other movable. It also keeps old registration books for births, baptisms, weddings and deaths.

Two copies date from 1767. In one of them the first baptism record, celebrated on April 1st of said year of the girl Ana María Ramírez, is visible. Meanwhile, the first death, that of Doña Isabel Catalina, happened the next day. Franciscan friar Francisco Pérez signed both occurrences.

Another interesting fact is that a stone pelican crowns the atrium, representing the image of Jesus. Besides, there are underground passages with catacombs where the city founders’ remains rest.
