Casa de los Frijoles Pintos (House of Pinto Beans)

Ciudad Mier

This cultural site has three names: Casa de los Tejanos, Museo de la Batalla de 1842 and Casa de los Frijoles Pintos, the most popular, referring to a relevant epìsode in Mier’s history, is the latter.

Its clay walls served as a prison for 200 Texan soldiers who tried to form the border republic. However, defeated by national troops, they were arrested and sentenced to execution by Santa Anna’s order.

To avoid a massive bloodshed, the execution was carried out through a raffle: 176 pinto beans and 24 black beans were placed in a pot, Texans were blindfolded to select one—the outcome for blacks was death. The saved were sent to the Castillo del Salado in San Luis Potosí and later released.

Today, the house not only tells this tragic story, it also displays weaponry and documents from the 19th century Mexican and US Army battles.
