Grutas del Coconá (Coconá Caves)

Three kilometers northern Teapa, in Eureka y Belén ejido, you’ll find Grutas del Coconá. Their name comes from the zoque and means “deep water”. Due to their beauty they were declared “Natural Monument” by Tabasco’s Congress.

Discovered by Rómulo and Laureano Calzada brothers in 1982, these eight rooms caves has capricious natural formations such as stalactites and stalagmites that come out furiously from their walls, as well as figures that remind spectral beings or different animals for imaginative minds.

Inside, prehistoric animal remains such as a Quaternary era mammoth have been found.
