Temple of Santiago Apostol

Tapijulapa / Tacotalpa

Walking through town’s main square you’ll find José López Portillo avenue that will take you to the beginning of a long staircase, towards the top where the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol is, one of Tabasco few and oldest viceroyalty-built religious temples that has withstood time passage.

Although climbing those stairs could be tiring, it is worth it: you’ll have one of the best views for admiring town’s houses-and-natural-beauties. Be prepared to take the best photos.

The 17th-century construction is one of the town's most popular places. Besides the beautiful landscapes that can be seen from the heights, the white and red building itself is catalogued as a Historical Monument by Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (National Institute of Anthropology and History), and at one time it served as a hospital and army station.

It draws tourists attention for its semicircular arch of the facade, as well as for the two bell towers and its covered-by-wooden-frame-tiles roof in tune with town’s houses. Inside, you’ll find three images: a standing Christ, another reclining in the holy sepulcher and one of the Virgin of Guadalupe of whom you can also admire a beautiful crucifix on the altar and several apostles images that give this site name.
