The municipality of Macuspana is located in the Usumacinta region, in the swamp area in the state of Tabasco and about 45 kilometers (72 miles) from Villahermosa.
The origin of the word Macuspana has not been found with certainty, over the years it has been the subject of discussion among various settlers and linguists, but it has been agreed to use the interpretation made by Marcos E. Becerra, José Narciso Rovirosa and Manuel Gil and Sáenz.

Macuspana from Nahuatl ‘Macui-chpana’, meaning ‘Lugar de las Cinco Barreduras’ (Place of the five “sweepings”), enjoys a warm humid climate, with abundant rains in summer. It is advisable to visit in May because the climate is more pleasant to enjoy the attractions of Macuspana.

Macuspana is also known for being one of the places where important vestiges of the Mayan culture were discovered, they are considered to be part of the classical period.

Walk through the historic center, and discover the gastronomy of Tabasco, taste the traditional turkey tamale, chipilín tamale and some delicious “pejelagarto maneas” (maneas are a type of tamale).

There are many sweets, such as corn bread, dulce de leche, papaya sweet and cream, in terms of drinks, you should not leave Macuspana without first having had a very cold pozol or a chorote (typical drink, made of the mixture of corn with cocoa).

How to get to Macuspana?

The easiest way to get to Macuspana is from the capital of Tabasco, Villahermosa, you can take a bus, and the trip takes about an hour, if you want to get to Macuspana by car, you just have to follow Federal Highway 180, with a length of 50 kilometers (80 miles), and pass through Dos Montes.
