The wetlands of Bahia Adair (Adair Bay), located near Puerto Peñasco in Sonora, have been designated as a Ramsar site since 2009, for the surveillance and protection of the three habitats it comprises: the estuaries, the artesian wells, and the salt flats.

The esteros are characterized by their high salinity, given the high evaporation of the water, and they keep the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems connected. In addition, they serve as nesting, resting, and feeding areas for both resident and migratory birds.

While the artesian wells or springs are formed by freshwater that emerges from the aquifer that runs under the clay layer of the Gran Desierto de Altar, one of the aridest and extreme in North America. Thus, the wells have enormous ecological importance for the species adapted to their conditions and for the mammals and birds that take advantage of their freshwater.

These wetlands have a rich biodiversity, extending along 76 kilometers ( 47 miles ) of the coast, from Punta Borrascoso to Estero La Cholla. From the surroundings of Puerto Peñasco, there are some trails that can be walked to discover the fauna and flora of the area.
