Leonora Carrington Museum

Xilitla

It seems as though Xilitla is the heart and veins for the flow of Surrealist art in the country, since the perfect connection of the Surrealist path of “ Las Pozas “ with the Plaza de Armas leads us directly to the Leonora Carrington Museum.

Open in 2018, this site stands out at first glance for a replica of the painter's signature made out of iron that decorates the facade of the building that also mixes traditional and contemporary architecture. Get ready to visit the three permanent rooms and a temporary one built over 814 square meters.

This is the perfect home for 63 bronze sculptures (some in large format), as well as 25 masks, photographs, lithographs, drawings and even tools used by the English painter who arrived in Mexico in 1942 fleeing the Nazi regime. It is an unmissable visit that will take you to discover the universe created by Leonora who lived a childhood influenced by magical fairy tales, Alchemy, Celtic legends, tales of witchcraft and religious figures; all this important influeces for her mystical vision as an artist.

To end the afternoon extraordinarily, do not forget to visit the terrace of this place where you may drink a delicious coffee while you relax and admire the beautiful view of the Huasteca Potosina or magnify the experience with one of the other activities that the museum organizes on some days such as Celtic music concerts, Huapango performances or the performance of the play “Las Bestias que Danzan” (“The Beasts that Dance”), inspired by Carrington's plays.
