Cathedral of Our Lady of Expectation

San Luis Potosí

Architectural wealth
Also known as the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación (Cathedral of Our Lady of Expectation), San Luis Potosí's Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the most beautiful buildings made of pink quarry and is located in the Plaza de Armas.

A self-guided tour starts with its facade, which is decorated with distinctly baroque elements, such as Salomonic columns and niches housing the apostles, which are carved in white marble. To top it off, there is a quarry-carved sculpture of the Virgin. It also boasts towers, which were built with different materials and at different points in time; one of them is made of stone and the other is made of quarry.

The inside of the cathedral is a sculptural and pictorial jewel created by Claudio Molina and José Guiuseppe Compiani, both Italians and José de Paez and the Rodríguez brothers, all of whom are Mexican and considered the greatest New Spanish painters.

The wind organ and the choir stalls are worthy of mention, as they were carved in precious woods. You'll find a sculpture of Saint Sebastian towards the main altar, which is a replica of the one in the Catacombs of Saint Sebastiano, in Rome, and whose author is Lorenzo Bernini’s disciple, Antonio Giorgetti.
San Luis Potosí's Metropolitan Cathedral is classified as a national monument and is the only cathedral in the world that boasts 24 apostles as part of its structure, 12 of which were carved in stone and the rest in marble.
