Real de Catorce is the only destination in the country that boasts such a fun way to travel. Popularly known as “Willys” this type of tourist transportation will take you back to another time and place and will often make you feel like an explorer braving the desert.

There are two ways of approaching the Willys: you can either sit on a sturdy seat inside this colorful, antique 4x4 or you can ride atop its roof, where you'll need a firm grip to hold on to one of the available bars. Don't worry, though: the Willys were specifically designed to traverse de Real de Catorce's sinuous desert roads.

A three-hour tour will cost about MXN$150 per person. The adventure aboard a Willys begins at the former Socavón de Purísima Hacienda, where you'll be able to take a look into the mines. Afterward, you'll arrive in the desert, which is one of San Luis Potosí's most arid zones. The scenery is breathtaking.

Finally, you'll arrive at Estación Catorce. Unfortunately, there are no passenger train available here, but you'll still be able to see mammoth freight trains passing by.
