Former Socavón of the Purísima Hacienda

Real de Catorce

The former Socavón of the Purísima Hacienda is located at the Cuesta del Arrepentido, en route from Real de Catorce to Estación Catorce. It was one of the most important silver mines during the colonial period. This structure is remarkable as it once housed the second most productive mine in the country.

Although the 3,208-meter (2-mile) long mile at the foot of the Cuesta del Arrepentido is not accessible to the general public, you can tour into the vestiges of this ancient Hacienda. Take a stroll through the manor and visit the tienda de raya (the place where employees received their weekly paycheck), the chapel devoted to the Virgen de la Purísima, and its mineral storage rooms.

You can have a gllimpse inside the quarry oven and the 30-meter (98-foot) chimney where silver was smelted. Real del Catorce is a Pueblo Mágico filled with legends. Expert tour guides will be able to show you the Montaña del Diablo (Devil's Mountain) where, with a pinch of imagination, you will see a diabolical likeness.

From Real de Catorce, you can get to the former hacienda by taking a tour on the colorful Willys or, if you prefer, you can trek across the desert on horseback.
