Sótano de las Golondrinas (Swallows basement)

Aquismón

Getting up early in the morning is not as hard when you are doing it to presence one of the most spectacular sights that nature can give to us in the Magical Town of Aquismón: thousand of swifts coming out of a cave, which is also considered as the sixth deepest natural whole in the planet. We are talking about the Sótano de las Golondrinas, a natural hole with a depth of about 512 meters and which is divided in 2 sections; one of 376 meters and the other of 136 meters..

First explorers discovered the cave when it was inhabited by birds similar to swallows and this is the origin of the name of the cave. However, there are actually swifts that come from here, birds which are bigger than swallows.

The easiest way to visit the Sótano de las Golondrinas is early in the morning, at this time you will be able to see more than 3 millions of swifts coming out searching for food.

Around the abyss or hole, there are orals that help you come closer to the edge to look from there to the bottom. For doing this, you will have to go down 800 stairs that led you to the orals.

If you are a natural daredevil, then doing rappel is the best activity for you. It is allowed to descend to the basement, as long as there aren’t birds inside. For this reason this activity is forbidden during the months of April to June, when nesting takes place.
