Underwater Art Museum (MUSA)

Isla Mujeres

The MUSA is the first underwater museum in Mexico and is located in front of Isla Mujeres, in the area of the Costa Occidente National Park. It is made up of 515 life-size sculptures, designed by various artists and made with marine cement that generates the growth of coral reefs.

The works are distributed in three galleries at different depths: Manchones, Punta Nizuc and Punta Sam. To observe them, you don't need to be a diver. For example, the work “Bendiciones” (six giant hands resting on a sandy area) is 3.5 meters deep and is visible from the surface.

The best way to get to the Underwater Museum of Art is by joining a snorkeling or diving tour. Transportation can be by glass bottom boat or speedboat. Most of the providers of this service include a visit to the second largest barrier reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Reef, which is almost a thousand kilometers long.

The Underwater Museum was founded by the British Jason deCaires Taylor in 2009. Besides being an artist, he is an underwater naturalist and photographer. He has created two more underwater museums in the world, the Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote (Spain) and the Garden of Underwater Sculptures of Molinere Bay (on Granada Island). In the case of MUSA, the purpose of its installation was the recovery of the reef. Due to the human impact and distruction of Hurricane Wilma (2005) it was threatened. It also balances the daily amount of visits to the natural reef.
