Contoy Island

Isla Mujeres

About 16 miles (30 kilometers) from Isla Mujeres, is Contoy Island. Considered the most important bird sanctuary in the Mexican Caribbean and a national park, since 1998.

70% of its territory is covered by mangroves. There are also lagoons, white sand beaches , a beautiful jungle and reef, sorrounded by its characteristic turquoise tones. All this paradise is home to 210 birds species, like: cormorants, herons,

swallows and boobies birds. A VIP “host” is the brown pelican. Each year turns the island into the most important nesting site on the Atlantic coast.

But the birds are not the only attraction of Contoy Island when it comes to animals. Crocodiles inhabit this nine-kilometer-long piece of land while also being home to three species of sea turtles: loggerhead, white and hawksbill. Manta rays and whale sharks feed near the coast (the season is from May to September).

Visiting Contoy, also called the island of the birds (Isla de los pájaros), is quite an adventure, since only 200 people are allowed per day. To save your spot, you must check with the organization Amigos de Isla Contoy, for the authorized service providers to carry out tours.

Inside the island you can walk on mystic trails, go up to viewpoints and snorkel.

Consider that, being a protected natural area, there is no food service in the area. Therefore, it is recommended to bring bottles of water and snacks that you can only consume when you are on board the tour boats.
