El Cerrito archeological site

Querétaro

Just 4 miles from the city of Querétaro is El Cerrito, one of the archaeological zones which was occupied by a number of different indigenous cultures, including the Teotihuacán, Toltec, Chichimeca, Purépecha and the Otomies.

To get there, just take Boulevard Constituyentes and head towards the puente de Tejeda (Tejeda bridge) until you reach Calle Hidalgo. This important site, which houses a great deal of the Pre-Hispanic history in the region, is extremely close the city and very easy to reach. The remains of the pyramid are 82-feet high. Observe the walls and facades built from basalt rock, which were, at that time, hand-painted in red, blue and ochre.

However, there is a peculiar fact to mention about this archaeological zone in Querétaro: you will fin a construction which stands out, at the top of the pyramid. This is known as the Fortin and was built by the owner of the Ex-Hacienda El Cerrito, in 1887, and used as a dwelling place.

You need to hire a guide at the site if you want to really understand why members of Pre-Columbian cultures settled there. Don’t leave without taking a selfie in front of the pyramid.
