To deeply understand the drama of the difficult colonization of this region can be shown at the Historical Museum of the Sierra Gorda, located in a fort built in 1576 by orders of Viceroy Martín Enríquez de Almanza. Is one of the most important buildings that functioned as a jail for 50 years.
Throughout seven rooms, the visitor traces the evolution of human settlements in the Sierra Gorda, from prehistory to the present, through pieces such as images, vestiges, works of art and documents.
Thus, the museography shows the transformative action exerted by the different groups that inhabited the area, among them the Pames, who have survived to this day despite the devastating war they fought against the colonizers. The last room of the museum, ethnographic in nature, is a tribute to that survival.
