Tecamachalco

Puebla

Puebla has many communities that seem to be guardians that protect its history. One of these is Tecamachalco. We are talking about a small city whose name comes from Nahuatl and means “in the jaw of the stone”, because this hill resembles a jaw. This is the place where the first inhabitants of the region settled.

Tecamachalco is located in the southeast of Puebla state, 1 hour and 10 minutes, approximately, form the capital; 1 hour and a half from Tlaxcala; 2 hours 40 minutes from México City and hours and 15 minutes from Cuernavaca, Morelos.

Climate is mild since it is quite close to Tepeaca Valley. Average weather is 21º C, but it can get as low as 6º C during Winter, so it is important to plan in advance and bring clothing according to the time of the year.

First population in this zone were the Popolocas that settled here around 1441. Before Spanish settled here, this region was under the Mexicas' rule.

In 1530, the indigenous evangelization by the Spaniards took place. A church was built and also a Franciscan Convent.

Originally, this city was named Tecamachalco de la Asunción. In 1861, it was changed to Tecamachalco Town and finally in 1877 the official name given to this place was Guerrero’s Tecamachalco City.

At present, one of the most important symbols of the city is the Asuncion Parish, built in 1732. Here Asunción Virgin is worshiped. This beautiful temple is its most important religious center and every 15th August the Virgen de la Asunción is celebrated throughout the town.
