Basilica of the Immaculate Conception

Chignaguapan

This is an essential stop during your visit to Chignahuapan, Puebla. It will surprise you to see the modernity of the place, its high black quarry walls and columns, covered with paintings of biblical passages that narrate the most important events in the Catholic faith: from the Revelations to The Way of the Cross and the Crucifixion.

It has many vaults with cristograms and golden details and two angels that guard a colossal figure of 40 feet high, carved in red cedar wood, and a crown that is over 3 feet high with gemstone inlaid and gold plated; La Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción, the biggest one in all Latin America.

The fascination that gives the beauty of the figure, has been applauded by faithful and lovers of sacred art, by tourists from all latitudes and travelers that, without hesitation, walk all the way to the altar of this famous poblano temple. Among the most surprised by this work, was the pope Juan Pablo II, who requested the Vatican to convert the sanctuary into Minor Basilica in 1999, an unusual feat, considering that the place is not even 50 years old.

A detail that is worth mentioning , of which there is very little information about so far, is the fact that the huge figure was a work of the sculptor Jose Luis Silva, a proudly poblano artist that without even imagine it, has become a reference and a legend, thanks to the flawless feat of this majestic creation, wonderful and divine work from wherever you look at it.
