This ancient city, whose name means “Great Houses” was built, based on thick adobe walls, reminiscent of the people inhabiting the southern United States rather than other pre-Hispanic cultures in Mexico.
It is estimated that at least 2,000 rooms were erected here. Be sure not to miss the most important ones: the House of Serpents, which originally consisted of 24 single rooms, 2 double rooms, three halls and three squares. Later it grew and was adapted to breed macaws and turtles. In the House of the Macaws, 122 birds were found buried under its floor. The House of Furnaces receives this name because it houses large furnaces where the inhabitants cooked agave to make mescal. The Casa de la Noria, is consideered one of the largest and most important hydraulic constructions in Mesoamerica, because it has a network of channels for the distribution of water and a ferris wheel which is about 39 feet deep; in addition, turquoise and copper were found here, and in one of the rooms three million shells coming from the Pacific ocean were found. The House of Skulls and the House of the Dead received these names because of the large number of human remains found in them: ninety burials were found in the house of the dead.
An additional option for distraction and entertainment is to visit the Museum of Northern Cultures, very close to the Paquime archaeological site; as well as the shops selling Mata Ortiz pottery.
Starting in the 1970’s, an artistic movement based on these Clay Pots began. This was how the Mata Ortiz (the name of a small village close to Paquime) was born. Having started as replicas of the vessels or pots made in Paquime, this pottery has become one of the most important manifestations of art in clay in Mexico.
Paquime is located just 6 miles from the town of Nuevo Casas Grandes, over 124 miles from the city of Chihuahua. To get to Paquime we suggest following highway 16 from this city to Cauhtemoc City and then take route 23 until you arrive at Nuevo Casas Grandes, where you will find all the usual tourist options, including an airport. Very close by is old Casas Grandes, where you will also be able to find some services.
