San Pablo Villa de Mitla is a town whose origins are deeply rooted in ancient civilizations like the zapoteca and mixteca. At Museum Ervin Frissell at Benito Juarez street, you will be able to learn more about this. In its neoclassical building a parish used to live there and it was known as Casa Consistorial.

The beauty of the place is not only in its documental heritage, but also in its amazing architecture that is organized as a traditional colonial Oxaqueña house: a frontal corridor, wood columns ceilings made of wood and tiles, and red tiles in the floor. The perfect place, as you can imagine, for the collection inside that what ultimately seeks is to recuse the traditions and customs of the zapotec people.

The origins of this museum goes back to two American citizens : Erwin Robert Frissell y Howrad Leigh, while making research in the zone they try to seek also for a way to preserve archaeological pieces in the region. That way, the museum was created.

The museum is almost completely focused on Zapotec culture. It displays more than 40 thousand pieces and is the biggest and most specialized museum in a Prehispanic culture, not only in Mexico, but in the world.
