La Boca Cave

Santiago

At the top of a hill, in front of the Rodrigo Gomez dam, is the La Boca cave, better known as La Cueva de Los Murciélagos (The Cave of the Bats), because it is a sanctuary for these mammals.

It is estimated that around five million bats of six different species use this sanctuary as a refuge and, at sunset, you can see the trail they form in the sky when they leave in search of food. Since bat guano can be toxic, no one is allowed to enter the cave. However, the views from above are breathtaking.

The cave used to be a mine and many legends were told, one of which earned it a third name, the cave of Agapito Treviño because they claim that it was the hiding place of this legendary thief (who robbed the rich to give to the poor), who would have hidden his treasure in its depths.
