La Contaduría Fort

San Blas

The origin of San Blas dates back to the mid-seventeenth century when it was built as a shipyard and departure point for the colonization trips of the Spanish Crown. On the hill of San Basilio, in the center of the port, there are the vestiges of el Fuerte de la Contaduría, built to protect the region from pirate attacks and where the accounting offices of the Viceroyalty were established.

It is possible to walk around the bastion and around its cannons pointing to the sea. This bastion shelters el Museo Comunitario de San Blas (San Blas Community Museum) with historical documents of the fort, remains of pirate ships, and archeological pieces found in the surroundings. It is also one of the best spots with panoramic views of the port and its sunsets.

At the fort, you can admire the monument to the priest of Ahualulco, Don José María Mercado, who, being part of the fight for independence, arrived in San Blas and after being besieged by the conquistadors, threw himself into the ravine to find his death.
