Cerrito de Cristo Rey (Christ the King’s Small Hill)

Ixtlán del Río

Enjoy the panoramic view of “Ixtlán del Río” from the viewpoint of “Cerrito de Cristo Rey”(Christ the King’s small hill). The construction of this emblematic monument was requested by the parish priest Justo Barajas and the architect Guadalupe Vázquez was in charge of starting the project in 1947, finally the work was inaugurated on October 30, 1949.

This is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the region and every year a large number of parishioners come to it from various parts of the country.

The staircase that leads to the top of the enclosure has 544 steps and 15 landings with a cross on each one, at the foot of the monument there is a church, and the place has an esplanade of approximately 1500 square meters (16,145 sq. ft.).

In the last week of October, hundreds of pilgrims make a nine-day walking tour to the top of the hill to celebrate the great feast of Cristo Rey (Christ the King) that takes place on the last Sunday of that same month.
