La Carería Cultural House

Tlayacapan

A must when you’re visiting the Pueblo Mágico de Tlayacapan, is the Casa de Cultura La Cerería (La Carería Cultural House). A building whose walls have punctually seen the town's evolution. Built in 17th century as encomendero house, as times went by it became a candle factory (whose technique is highly appreciated in the region) and even revolucionary general Emiliano Zapata troops headquarter. Due to the beauty and large spaces of the enclosure, it's the town's currently cultural center.

Its architecture invites you to enter both the museum and the cultural enclosure that transformed the old rooms in different exhibition areas. In the central room, there is the permanent showing that includes crafts and prehispanic pieces found in the municipality.

The other rooms will help you to discover the historical cultural wealth of Tlayacapan, from its prehispanic past with the dances that originated Chinelos traditional dance, composers, many temples and even the archaeological remains in the vicinity of the region.

It’s common to find locals gathered to make the best of some of 26 workshops taught to help preserve their traditions and cultural expressions through the training of young artisans who exploit all their skills at the hands of researchers and teachers who guide them.
