Tlayacapan is part of Morelos’ convents route, so it’s not surprising that one of municipality main attractions was the majestic Former Convent of Saint John Baptist (Exconvento de San Juan Bautista), town’s patron saint, located in historic downtown.

Named World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this place was built in 1534 by Agustinian monks. Its outdoors chapel stands out, in addition to its walls where many very well-preserved frescoes can still be appreciated.

Don't miss the opportunity to go to the site museum in what was the refectory, the Profundis room and the sacristy that houses religious artefacts used in the Agustinians daily life and sacred art.

If you visit this museum, don’t forget to take a tour to the former convent storehouse, where in 1982 mummies of several children and teenagers were found. It’s believed they were children of important Spanish colonizers. It will certainly add a mystical touch to your day.
