Ex-convent of Santo Domingo Guzmán

Oaxtepec

With a simple facade but with an amazing past, this ex-convent located in the center of the town is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It was built in the 16th century over the Piramide Mayor del Señorío de Oaxtepec (“Greater Pyramid of the Lord of Oaxtepec”).

Inside you will find mural paintings alluding to biblical passages, captured from the walls to the arches, as well as a vault with floral motifs painted in turquoise, brown and ochre, which despite the centuries they have been there, you can still clearly appreciate.

There is also a terrace on the upper floor where you can lean out and have a wide view of the main square, it is a good place to refresh yourself, because most of the year Oaxtepec is quite hot.

In its wide patio, surrounded by arches, you will find a huge tree that shades almost the whole space, as well as many plants around it and in the center a circular planter. The floor is made of stone and the smell of the garden is persistent, the acoustics are quite pleasant as the birds seem to feel very comfortable flying over the patio without stopping their chirping.

A 12 minute walk away is the Sitio Arqueológico de Santa Rosa (Santa Rosa Archaeological Site) on the grounds of the church of Santa Rosa de Lima. You will recognize it because it is exposed and under a tree whose roots are showing.

The structure, built with andesite stone, is a small mound protected only by a net and guarded by the tree, as if they depended on each other to remain upright.
