Centro Vacacional IMSS Oaxtepec (Vacation Center IMSS Oaxtepec)

Oaxtepec

Located 95 minutes from Mexico City, the Centro Vacacional (Vacation Center) IMSS Oaxtepec “Lic. Adolfo López Mateos”, has been offering fun for the whole family for decades.

But something that only a few people know is that the recreation site also holds great treasures that go back about 500 years, when the Emperor Moctezuma had already adopted this paradisiacal enclave as his favorite.

It is said that the first ethnobotanical garden in America was built in Oaxtepec, under the mandate of Moctezuma, who, enchanted by the vegetation of the place, ordered the planting of medicinal and other ornamental plants that accentuated the beauty of the site.

Although there are currently no traces to give us an idea of how that garden was, according to the petroglyphs found when the water park was built, everything indicates it was where the garden had its home. Another interesting detail is that the emperor could only enjoy it for a short time, since years later he passed away.

Today you can see some of the petroglyphs and finds at the entrance of the spa -like the owl that years later would become the image of the resort -, as well as others that are in “ El Emperador” (“The Emperor”), where you will see these engravings in their original place.

After the necessary encounter with the past, it is time to refresh yourself in its pools, have a picnic in its permitted areas or extend your stay for the entire weekend, as it has hotels, cabins, houses and a camping area.

You will find an area of rustic pools that are pits built in stone where you can relax in its sulfurous waters. It's like visiting a centuries-old spa and, if you think about it, it really is.
