José de la Borda, who got immensely rich with the extraction of silver from Taxco mines, commissioned a resting house in Cuernavaca with its own church, surrounded by a beautiful tropical garden where he, as a great botany lover, planted a huge variety of species.
Over the years, the site was also the resting place of emperor Maximiliano de Habsburgo and his wife Carlota. Nowadays, the place is a charming attraction with a beautiful pond and several fountains that are open to the public.
In its so-called Juarez section, you will find the Museo Jardín Borda (Borda Garden Museum), which has a 18th century collection of furniture, dresses and documents. The gardens are the perfect place to relax and enjoy the greenery. As a curious fact, in this garden were planted the New Spain first mango trees.
