The origin of Tlalpujahua is mining and this was its main economic activity until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1937, the waste from the Mina Dos Estrellas (Two Stars Mine) caused a landslide that buried the Carmen neighborhood. The only remains was a tower from its main church.
With the passing of time, the Torre del Carmen (Del Carmen's Tower) became a memory of that terrible moment.
