Principal Square

Santa Clara del Cobre

Visiting the town's main square, the most popular meeting place both inhabitants and visitors, is a must. There, in the very heart of Santa Clara del Cobre, stands the construction most popular and iconic: a one-of-a-kind bandstand crowned by a copper dome—a masterpiece that reaffirms the outstanding trade of these lands.

This monument shows its elegance in all its splendor when the rays of the sun are reflected in the coppery metal; a must see view. Not satisfied, the artisans finished off the structure by placing a large saucepan in the center harmonizing with the shiny roof of the kiosk.

On one side of the central square, you’ll find the 15th century temple of Nuestra Señora del Sagrario, dedicated to the artisans’ patron saint—Santa Clara de Asís. The church’s facade is the original one, in a baroque style very common in colonial buildings.

Be amazed by all the chandeliers and ornamental copper finials that adorn the atrium inside the parish. After seeing this building up close, take a walk for the portals around the central square, where you can buy handicrafts or try its exquisite “tortas de tostada” made from Apache meat or carnitas, accompanied by atole de pinole (a type of cornmeal mush). You can’t say that you visited Santa Clara del Cobre if you don’t delight your palate with one of these delicacies.
