Petatán Island

Sahuayo

We are used to hearing that Michoacán is the great refuge of the monarch butterfly. However, very close to Sahuayo, from November to April, you can see the arrival of the pelicanos borregones (American white pelicans) that travel from the south of Canada to the Island of Petatán, in Lake Chapala, which is shared by the states of Michoacán and Jalisco.

In a single season, up to 20 thousand American pelicans can be seen, which due to their dense white plumage are nicknamed “borregones”. They have the characteristic of being very large: they can reach a wingspan of three meters ( 10 feet ) while from beak to tail they measure up to 1.75 meters ( 5.7 feet ) long and weigh 7 kilos ( 15 pounds ).

Thanks to the fishermen of the region, the pelicans concentrate in large colonies to feed on the remains of fishing. The spectacle is greater during the sunset, when they return to their nests to continue nesting their future breeds.
