Las Tarascas Fountain and Callejón del Romance (Romance Alley)

Morelia

At Francisco I. Madero Street you will find beautiful women accompany the aqueduct of Morelia route—the bronze sculptures that make up the emblematic Fountain “Las Tarascas.”

It was made by the sculptor José Luis Padilla Retana in 1984, and is believed to represent the three purépechas princesses Atzimba, Eréndira and Tzetzangari with bare torso and carrying a tray full of fruit.

A few steps away, not far from the fountain, is the most romantic corner in the entire Historical Center of Morelia: the “Callejón del Romance” (the alley of romance). This idyllic setting will leave you breathless with its fountains and lanterns that give it a picturesque touch.

As you walk through it, you will discover the reason for its name—along its walls you can read the verses of Don Lucas Ortiz’ poem “Romance de mi ciudad”. The “morelenses” (people who were born and live in Morelia) tell that if you write your name and that of your beloved on a red ribbon, tie it around a padlock and hook him to any of the alley’s doors, windows or lanterns, the love of your beloved one will be eternal.
