Iglesia del Hospitalito (Hospitalito Church)

Cuitzeo del Porvenir

Also called “Casa de Indios” (“House of the Indians”), it was one of the Franciscan contributions to Cuitzeo. According to the history, the religious order used to install a hospital before building their temples.

Different periods converge in the place, because although the construction of the Templo del Hospital Franciscano (“Temple of the Franciscan Hospital”) that you will see now was made during the 18th century, its facade belongs to the 16th century and is of Renaissance style, however, there are altars from the 19th century.

The atrium is simple and is practically a cobblestone path with two gardens on either side, with no ornamentation, just grass and some trees. Its facade continues by the same speech of simplicity and symmetry with the natural stones and a single tower on the right side.

As a whole, the naturalness of the construction is reflected in an organic, harmonious and even relaxing way, achieving absolute tranquility inside and outside the place.

The interior treasures an ancient virgin of the Immaculate Conception made of corn paste, a technique in which Purepecha peoples are extraordinary creators and is very representative of the region.
