Former Convent of Santa María Magdalena / Museum of Prints

Cuitzeo del Porvenir

Founded by the Augustinian friars, el Convento de Santa María Magdalena (“St. Mary Magdalene Convent”) combines the architectural style developed in the High Middle Ages and the Renaissance architecture.

It was the fifth founded in the former province of Michoacán and is one of the best preserved works of the 16th century. A little more than a decade ago it was transformed into the “Museo de la Estampa” (“Museum of Prints”) of el Antiguo Convento de Santa María Magdalena (“Former Convent of Santa María Magdalena”).

It offers guided tours so you can get to know the charm of the building from another perspective, it has spaces for presentations, conferences and some cultural festivals.

If you are lucky, you may even be able to attend a concert, and if not, take a tour of the building to see the entrance gates, which were once an open chapel and still have an impressive mural about the Last Judgment.

Through its corridors you can find the cells that were used by the monks, with that absolute silence that accompanies places like this. Imagine how the days were there... no distractions, no noise, no internet: it was just 1550.
