Route of Chiles en Nogada and Tlayudas

Oaxaca, Puebla, Cholula, Tehuacán

Start this tour in one of the most beautiful cities in the country: Puebla. Its climate, its gastronomy and its cultural activities make it a very special place to visit. The Historic Downtown preserves a significant amount of stately buildings from the colonial era. In Los Portales you can find several restaurants to delight yourself with the typical dishes: the mole poblano or the chiles en nogada.

Furthermore, you can visit more than 50 museums where you will enjoy amazing art collections. Cholula, located thirty minutes northwest of Puebla, is a Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) with a great Prehispanic and colonial history. We recommend exploring the Archaeological Site, where it is possible to tour the inside of the pyramid, climb to its top and enjoy the enchanting views from the atrium of the Virgen de los Remedios church. Then take a stroll through its cobbled streets and visit the different craft shops and restaurants. Finish your tour at the Plaza de la Concordia (Concordia Square) and admire the vast religious complex of San Gabriel Arcángel and the Capilla Real de Naturales (Real de Naturales Chapel), with its amazing 49 domes.

Continue the trip to Tehuacán, located two hours southeast of Cholula. This Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) has two incredible places you must definitely visit: the Reserva de la Biósfera de Tehuacán-Cuicatlán (Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve) and the archaeological site of La Mesa. At downtown Tehuacán, you can visit the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (Nuestra Señora de la Concepción Cathedral) and the Municipal Palace, as well as taste the delicious sherbets and the traditional muéganos.

Oaxaca marks the end of this journey. It is located two hours and forty minutes southeast of Tehuacán and has many tourist attractions. In addition to taking a walk through the colorful Historic Downtown, we recommend visiting the Museo de Arte Prehispánico (Prehispanic Art Museum), the Museo Textil de Oaxaca (Textile Museum of Oaxaca), the Casa de Juárez Museum and the Ethnobotanical Garden. At the Municipal Market you can taste the tlayudas and buy handcrafts as well as embroidered blouses.
