Pancho Villa, Archaeology and Paquimé Culture Border Route

Ciudad Juárez, a modern border city, and it will be the starting point of this original route. In the downtown area you can visit the neoclassical cathedral where the traditional Matachin dance is performed every Sunday. The Misión de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe) is another popular attraction since it was one of the first in the area. Ciudad Juárez was also the scene of important revolutionary events, it even was the headquarters of Pancho Villa, learn more about this in some of its museums. In this modern city you will find a great variety of entertainment centers and shopping malls.

Going through a place called Los Tríos, you will reach Ascención, a place founded by Mexicans who had emigrated to the United States in 1872 and whose families remained there. One of its main attractions is the Aduana Fronteriza (Border Customs) building and the Historical Cultural Center.

Following the route you will arrive at Janos, a beautiful little town that is very close to the border with the United States. Due to its location, it has a great multicultural influence where Mormons, Mennonites and mestizos coexist. It is surrounded by beautiful ojos de agua and natural water springs. It used to be land of Apaches, so very close to it you will find interesting archaeological sites, such as La Juanaqueña.

To complete the route you will visit the Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) of Casas Grandes. Here, the Paquimé culture is very important, so you cannot miss its archaeological site and museum. Other important nearby attractions are the Cueva de la Golondrina, the Cueva de la Olla and the Reserva de la Biósfera de Janos (Janos Biosphere Reserve).
