The state capital is small and compact, with many places of interest both in the center and in the surrounding area. If you would like to know its history then don't forget to visit the Palacio de Gobierno murals that the so called last Mexican muralist Desiderio Hernandez Xochitiotzin painted, these murals tell the state history in 24 segments. Tlaxcala state is also famous as a culinary destination for its wide range of regional dishes.

Gastronomía

Tlaxcala state is also famous as a culinary destination with a wide range of regional dishes such as tamales or barbacoa (lamb wrapped in maguey leaves cooked in an oven hole).

Prehispanic Food

The mixture of pre-Hispanic food with ingredients and meat brought from Europe generated a mixture of flavors and colors, resulting in one of the richest and most varied cuisines in Mexico.

Maguey

Delicious Products One of the most famous products is the maguey, from which pulque, aguamiel, quiote or maguey flower are obtained; mixiote to wrap the meat and make a delicious dish, and insect-based foods such as red worms chinocuiles and maguey eggs.

Another one of the most popular products is corn in its different varieties to prepare atole, tortillas and many variants.

The list goes on and on and we recommend, of course, that you don't miss the opportunity to try bean soup, tortilla soup, Tocatlán chicken, tortitas de huazontle, ricotta with piloncillo honey, Chiautempan or Huamantla muéganos, amaranth water, among other Tlaxcala dishes.

STATEMENT REGARDING SEPTEMBER 19TH EARTHQUAKE IN CENTRAL MEXICO

The sympathies of the Mexico Tourism Board, and the entire Mexican tourism industry, go out to those affected by the earthquake in Central Mexico on September 19, 2017.

Mexico’s Federal, State and Local Governments have activated response plans in order to support the individuals impacted as well as to assess damages.

According to the latest information, damages have been reported in parts of Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico City. Tourist attractions remain open and functioning in these destinations. While the international airports in Mexico City and Puebla suspended operations as a standard precaution yesterday, both airports reopened within 4 hours and are now fully operational.

Additionally, we are thankful to report that no other international tourism destinations in Mexico have been affected and are operating normally.

Given these facts, there is no reason for visitors to cancel travel plans to Mexico.

The Mexico Tourism Board, and the entire tourism industry, are focused on ensuring visitors in affected destinations receive any assistance necessary while continuing with their existing travel plans.

Updates on the situation will be shared as new information becomes available.
