San Juan de los Lagos Sanctuary

San Juan de los Lagos

The main attraction of San Juan de los Lagos is the sanctuary visited by millions of pilgrims every year. It is a temple built in pink quarry in the 18th century, its two baroque towers can be seen from any point of the city; these and its vault are decorated with mosaics.

One of the first miracles attributed to the Virgin was the resurrection of a seven year old girl, daughter of a circus family. This caused that little by little people came to the place to ask for help in difficult situations, in exchange they began to offer her gifts and visits from far away places.

The greatest pilgrimages San Juan de los Lagos receives annually come from San Pedro de la Laguna, Tultepec, Santa María Tonanitla and Huehuetoca, Estado de México; Apan, Hidalgo; San Francisco del Rincón and León, Guanajuato.

During your visit to San Juan de los Lagos you can also visit la Capilla del Primer Milagro (“The Chapel of the First Miracle”), an architectural work of the 17th century, distinguished by the vegetable details of its quarry facade and columns.

The festivity of the Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos takes place on February 2nd, Día de la Candelaria (“Candlemas Day”), and it is the date when most pilgrims come to visit her, either on foot or by doing errands, so it is common to see people arriving on their knees or with cactuses with thorns on their chests.
