Whale Watch

Puerto Vallarta

The hugely-exciting activity of whale watching can be enjoyed in Puerto Vallarta during wintertime in the Northern Hemisphere (between the months of December and March), when little over a thousand humpback whales migrate to this area of mild water every year, to carry out courting rituals, mate, and give birth to their young, providing a huge spectacle for travelers.

Travelers wanting to see the huge cetacean in its natural habitat must go with a certified tour operator, who has permission from the Secretaría del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat) (Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources). These are the only operators who can guarantee that your tour will cause no negative impact to the humpback whales.

Please bear in mind that there are limited departure times for such tours and that a minimum distance of 197 feet (60m) must be maintained between you and the whales, so as not to disturb the sea giants. Tours last approximately four and a half hours, and you will be accompanied by a biologist and a nature photographer throughout the trip.

You will have a wonderful time observing the humpback whales, who are sure to put on a natural show for you, around 656-1,640 feet (200-500m) from the shore, complete with jumps and fin-slapping.
