Mascota

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores is one of the most important buildings of Mascota and dates back to the 18th century, although the three-level bell tower with a pyramid-shaped top was completed some time later. The facade is baroque style, has a large atrium and the interior consists of a single nave.

To the side of the Main Square are the Municipal Palace and several colonial style houses that end up proposing a totally harmonious complex.

About five blocks away is another landmark of the town: el Templo Inconcluso de la Preciosa Sangre (the Unfinished Temple of the Precious Blood), a robust church whose construction was interrupted during the Cristero War. The vestiges of the building became a magnificent garden full of flowers that is absolutely photogenic and ideal for relaxation and meditation.

While strolling through the charming streets of Mascota, you should stop by the Archaeology Museum, located at Allende 115, which preserves more than 600 pieces recovered from the archaeological site of El Pantano, which is actually a great cemetery dating back to 800 B.C. Two other museums in town are el Museo El Pedregal (El Pedregal Museum), created by writer and collector Francisco Rodríguez Peña, which preserves all kinds of objects made of stone; and el Museo Raúl Rodríguez (Raúl Rodríguez Museum), which covers the different facets of Mascota's culture.
