Stepping through the doorway to Teatro José Rosas Moreno (the José Rosas Moreno Theater) takes you back to the Porfiriato (Porfirian era) when it was inaugurated. Apart from the wooden detailing, the most striking aspects you see when you walk in are the deep red seats and stage curtain.
Building work began in 1867 and took 40 years to complete. The venue was finally inaugurated on May 5, 1907, however, Don Agustín Rivera held a re-opening ceremony on August 6 of the same year. It was defined by Rivera as the Palacio de las Bellas Letras y de las Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Literature and Fine Arts).
The conceptual artist for the venue was Jesús Herrera from San Luis Potosí, who included paintings by Dr. Bernardo Reyna in the decoration. Aída by Giuseppe Verdi was the first play to be held at the venue.
Nowadays, you can enjoy plays, dance and opera, among others.
